Hospitality bosses, in particular, are angry with the move, which will add £615 a year to the cost of employing a member of staff, rising to around £1,000 if the increase in the National Living Wage, also kicking in next April, is taken into account. In a sector often operating on low single-digit margins, that extra staffing cost could be the difference between profit and loss.
